Unlocking AI’s Potential with Your Soracom Data: Introducing the Soracom MCP Server

AI, Abstract

In an era where Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming every industry, IoT remains one of the richest and most underutilized sources of actionable data. While AI platforms like OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Anthropic’s Claude offer powerful tools for reasoning and automation, tapping into real-time operational data from your IoT deployment often remains a challenge.

At Soracom Discovery 2025, we introduced a new capability designed to close this gap: the Soracom MCP Server.

What is the Soracom MCP Server?

The Soracom MCP Server is a new open-source software module that brings your Soracom-connected devices into direct interaction with modern AI systems using the Model Context Protocol (MCP).

If you’re not familiar with MCP, think of it like the “USB-C of AI integrations.” It’s a standardized way to let Large Language Models (LLMs) securely and predictably interact with external tools, data sources, and APIs. Just as USB-C simplifies device connections, data transfer, and charging across different manufacturers and operating systems, MCP simplifies data interaction between your systems and AI agents.

The Soracom MCP Server acts as an adapter between the MCP ecosystem and the Soracom API, enabling LLMs to query, visualize, and even act upon your connectivity data, all within a natural language chat interface.

Why Soracom Built an MCP Server

During his keynote at Discovery 2025, Soracom CEO Ken Tamagawa explained the broader strategy:

“We suddenly realized something: the IoT world we envisioned 10 years ago, where everything is connected and resonates to improve the world… generative AI was the final piece. With that piece in place, we were able to create tremendous value in a world accompanied by the dramatic evolution of generative AI and the data from the real world.

I believe we are entering an era where AI transforms into value. To put it another way, the buried treasures that have come together through IoT will eventually be excavated by generative AI technology.”

—Ken Tamagawa, CEO of Soracom”

While community-built MCP servers exist, many organizations are rightfully cautious about relying on unofficial or unmaintained projects to interact with sensitive IoT systems. For Soracom, the goal was to create a secure, transparent, and officially supported MCP server that customers could trust.

As CTO Kenta Yasukawa noted:

“The question of how to take action on data has been a longstanding challenge. But with the advent of MCP and AI reasoning models, we can now close the loop between detection and intelligent response.”

How It Works

The Soracom MCP Server is designed to be installed locally (or in your own cloud environment) and configured to interact with your Soracom account via secure API access. Once running, it acts as a backend agent that AI platforms can talk to.

You can then configure your preferred AI tools, such as VS Code’s Copilot Chat, ChatGPT with browsing/plugins enabled, or Claude Desktop, to route MCP queries through this server.

This lets you do things like:

  • Ask for a list of inactive SIMs.
  • Query historical data usage for a device.
  • Diagnose connectivity issues.
  • View billing summaries.
  • Trigger real API actions, such as suspending a SIM or retrieving diagnostics.

You can even configure fine-grained access control, specifying exactly which Soracom API endpoints are exposed to the LLM.

“It’s easier to understand if you actually see it,” said Tamagawa during the demo. “You tell ChatGPT to fetch billing data, and it connects to the MCP server, creates a table, turns it into a chart, and lets you dig deeper. You can think of more and more things from there.”

Key Use Cases

The Soracom MCP Server is not just a developer convenience, it’s a bridge to a smarter, more proactive IoT operation. Here are just a few practical applications:

1. Diagnose Abnormal SIM Behavior

Ask the AI to identify SIMs switching between networks too often, or not connecting as expected. The server pulls logs and statistics via Soracom’s API to surface this information in plain English.

2. Guided Configuration and Automation

Need to set up 100 new SIMs with specific tags, groups, and alerting policies? Let your AI agent guide the process, or even execute it.

3. Real-Time Billing Insight

Generate billing summaries by SIM group, region, or service type. Ask questions like: “Which services had the highest cost increase this month?” and get a direct answer.

4. Fleet Visualization and Mapping

Ask your AI to plot SIMs on a map, highlighting inactive or underused devices. With geolocation and metadata via Soracom’s API, this becomes a rich source of insight.

5. MCP Server Chaining and Extension

For customers already running an internal MCP server, the Soracom MCP Server can be integrated into that environment. This allows AI agents to access not just your device metadata or internal documentation, but also live connectivity data from Soracom, creating a unified AI operating layer.

Availability

The Soracom MCP Server is in Early Access:

  • An experimental-grade implementation
  • Available on GitHub and npm
  • MIT license to encourage developer experimentation
  • Documentation and quickstart guides for setup

The server’s long-term architecture and feature roadmap are still under development, and Soracom eagerly welcomes community input. As Tamagawa encouraged attendees:

“We would love for everyone to try it out and provide feedback. We’re eager to evolve this together toward our vision of a real world AI platform.”

AI Enablement: A Strategic Imperative

From the introduction of Soracom Flux and Flux Templates, to services like Query Intelligence and now the MCP Server, Soracom is positioning its platform to make AI-native IoT deployments not only possible, but practical.

“We’re not aiming to build our own AI model,” Tamagawa explained. “Our mission is to connect everything to AI – Bridging the physical world and the digital, enabling action from insight, and making things happen.”

That vision is now accessible using your Soracom data. And it’s open for everyone to build on.
