Ask Your Fleet a Question: Soracom Query Now Includes 500 Free Queries for Every Account
TL;DR
- Every Soracom account now includes 500 free Soracom Query executions per coverage type, applied automatically with no signup and no expiration date.
- The old two-month Trial plan is gone, replaced by a permanent Free plan, so teams can explore their IoT data on their own schedule.
- Built-in AI assistance turns plain-language questions into SQL, putting fleet insight within reach of people who don’t write queries for a living.
Most organizations running connected devices are sitting on more operational insight than they use. The data is there: which devices are online, how much traffic each one is pushing, where connections are dropping. The problem is making the most of it.
Pulling that picture together usually means exporting logs, wrangling spreadsheets, or waiting for an analyst. By the time the answer arrives, the question may have already moved on.
Soracom Query was built to shorten that path – and starting now, trying it costs nothing.
What’s Changing?
Though Soracom users had been able to test the Query service via a two-month trial plan, it put a clock on exploration and asked users to make a decision before they knew what they’d get out of it.
That trial plan has now been replaced with a Free option that:
- Applies automatically to every Soracom account. There is nothing to register for or activate.
- Includes 500 free queries per coverage type. Japan coverage and Global coverage each have their own separate allowance of 500.
- Never expires. Unused free queries stay available indefinitely. (Note that the allowance is a one-time pool, not a monthly refresh.)
A root user, or a SAM user with Soracom Query permission, can open Soracom Query Studio and start running queries right away.
What Counts as a Query?
One query is one SQL execution. Reading the schema, checking your remaining allowance, and viewing or exporting results don’t use any of it, and queries rejected before they run, such as those with a SQL error, aren’t counted.
When the AI assistant runs analysis on your behalf, a single question can take more than one query, as it refines its approach. To keep that in check, it pauses after five queries and asks whether you want it to continue. See how many queries one question can run.
What Can You Learn From Your Data?
Soracom Query lets you analyze the connectivity and IoT data already accumulating on the Soracom platform using SQL. That includes line management data alongside the data your devices generate.
In practice, that opens up questions like:
- Which devices are consuming more data than expected, and since when?
- How is connection status trending across a group of SIMs or a region?
- Are there early warning signs, such as rising disconnects or unusual traffic patterns, that point to a problem before customers notice?
- What does last month’s fleet activity look like, in a format ready for a management report?
These are the questions that keep operations, finance, and leadership teams aligned. Having them answered in minutes, rather than days, changes how quickly a business can act.
You Don’t Need to be an SQL Expert
SQL is powerful, but it’s not everyone’s daily language. That’s why Soracom Query Studio includes an AI-powered SQL Assistant that turns natural language into SQL.
In Simple Mode, where Query Studio opens by default, users can pick a preset question or type their own, such as “Which devices had high data traffic last month?” The assistant writes the SQL, runs it, checks the results, and refines its approach until it has an answer. Results can be viewed as a chart or table, or downloaded as CSV.
Advanced Mode puts the SQL editor alongside the assistant, for teams who want to review or fine-tune queries themselves. Here, Agent Mode is optional: switch it off and the assistant drafts SQL for you to run, or switch it on to let it iterate on its own.
Both modes draw on the Soracom Query schema reference, which lists all the data available for analysis for Global and Japan coverage, in formats designed to be readable by both people and AI tools.
Bring the Questions to the AI Tools You Already Use
For many teams, the most natural place to ask a question isn’t a new console – it’s the AI assistant they already have open.
The Soracom Query MCP Server connects Soracom Query to AI agents such as Claude and ChatGPT using the Model Context Protocol, an open standard for linking AI tools to outside data. Once connected, you can ask your assistant about your fleet in plain language, and it will look up the schema, run the query, and summarize the results in the same conversation.
A few things worth knowing:
- It’s read-only. The server can run queries against your data, but it can’t create, change, or delete SIMs, groups, or other Soracom resources.
- It respects your permissions. Users sign in with their own Soracom account, and the AI agent acts with that account’s permissions only. (note: SAM SIM/group restrictions will not filter Query results)
- It uses the same allowance. Queries run through the MCP server count toward your Soracom Query plan just like queries in Query Studio, which makes the free 500 an easy way to try it out.
- Mind where your data goes. Query results are passed to the AI provider behind your assistant and handled under that provider’s terms, so check that against your own data policies.
There’s a companion option too. The Soracom Knowledge MCP Server lets AI agents search Soracom’s documentation and API references. It’s free, requires no Soracom account, and doesn’t touch your query allowance, so your assistant can learn how Soracom works while it helps you analyze your own data.
When You’re Ready for More
Your remaining free queries are shown on the Soracom Query page in the Soracom User Console and in the Query Studio user menu, and you’ll see a notice as you approach the limit. Once the free allowance for a coverage type is used up, query execution stops for that coverage type. To keep going, you can upgrade to the Business plan, which includes 2,000 queries per month, or the Enterprise plan. See Soracom Query plans for details.
Paid plans also open the door to user tables, a new Early Access feature that lets you combine your own data with Soracom data in the same analysis. Upload a CSV of device installation sites to Soracom Harvest Files, for example, and you can see usage by region or location at a glance, without stitching reports together by hand. User tables are available on Business and Enterprise plans by application through Soracom Support. Learn more about user tables.
A few notes for existing users:
- Already on a Trial plan? You can keep using it until it expires. After that, the Free plan applies automatically.
- Already on Business or Enterprise? Nothing changes for you.
Start Asking Better Questions
The value of IoT data has never been in collecting it. It’s in the decisions it makes possible. By removing the trial clock and the signup step, we want every Soracom customer to be able to find out what their fleet has been trying to tell them.
Open Soracom Query Studio from the User Console to get started, and see the Soracom Query documentation for details. Questions? Contact Soracom Support.
