Soracom eSIM Terminology:Because eSIMs are not the only solution designed to provide cellular connectivity at a minimal form-factor, there may be some confusion as to what exactly an eSIM is. Colloquially, the term eSIM can refer to any number of technologies, from the physical SIM soldered to a device to software solutions. With Soracom, however, the term will only be used to refer to the physical MFF2 form factor SIM, not any of the software or technologies (such as eUICC) that the term may also be equated with.

Soracom eSIM FAQ

What are the advantages of eSIMs vs. standard plastic (3-in-1) SIM cards?
eSIMs are a modern communication solution that boasts the same core functionality of a standard plastic SIM card at a fraction of the space. This surface-mount chip is permanently soldered directly onto an IoT device’s PCB during manufacturing, removing the need for physical SIM slots. This provides a number of advantages over devices utilizing standard SIM cards, including:
• Smaller space requirements
• More robust construction
• More impact/shock/environmental resilience and reliability
• More secure construction that is less prone to theft and failure

What kinds of applications benefit most from the eSIM?
While it’s minimal form factor has made the eSIM a natural fit for wearables and medical devices where space is at a premium, the eSIM has also proven to be a game changer for rugged applications that can benefit from it’s more robust and reliable construction. This includes the automotive market, as well as industrial metering and monitoring, among others.

How do Industrial Grade eSIMs compare to Commercial Grade eSIMs? What are the typical use case examples?
Most IoT applications will be covered by either commercial-grade or industrial-grade eSIMs, with the former generally providing a similar level of temperature and moisture resistance as standard (3-in-1) SIM cards. Commercial Grade eSIMs will be suitable for general applications such as smart devices, wearables, general-purpose sensors, and other use cases where the temperature, humidity, or other environmental conditions are not so severe that a regular SIM card would fail prematurely.

For applications in more challenging environments, industrial-grade SIMs become a better fit, as they boast greater temperature and humidity tolerance and a longer expected lifespan overall. This makes industrial-grade eSIMs ideal for agriculture, smart factories, certain types of transportation, and other applications where environmental conditions may vary more significantly.

Do the Soracom eSIMs come in reels or trays?
Our Global multicarrier Embedded SIMs based on Air plan01s: SGECL01 (Commercial Grade) and SGEIL01 (Industrial Grade) come in 1.000 or 3.000 reel sizes. The eSIM Mini Reel (SKU: SGEIL01-01-100) is an exception, which arrives in a reel including 100 eSIMs.

Does Soracom eSIMs support Narrowband IoT and LTE-M?
Absolutely. The Soracom eSIM supports multiple cellular technologies, including LTE-M and NB-IoT. Visit our coverage page to find out where your devices can connect via these two technologies using the Soracom IoT eSIM.

How does the Soracom eSIM Mini Reel differ from other Soracom eSIMs?
Our eSIM Mini Reel (SKU: SGEIL01-01-100) is from our Industrial Grade eSIM family and includes 100 individual eSIMs. Our other Industrial eSIM products come in reels of 1,000 or 3,000 eSIMs. This smaller reel size makes this product ideal for prototyping and testing at the beginning of an IoT journey.

Does the Soracom eSIM Mini Reel support eUICC?
No, the eSIM contained within the eSIM Mini Reel do not possess eUICC capabilities. Soracom does, however, carry other eUICC-capable eSIMs. Please contact sales@soracom.io to discuss which solution works best for your IoT deployment.

Does the Soracom eSIM Mini Reel support Subscription Containers?
All Soracom eSIMs based on Air plan01s, regardless of eUICC compatibility, support Subscription Containers, which allow you to add extra subscription plans to the same eSIM and enable multicarrier redundancy.
