SORACOM IoT communication platform introduces "SORACOM Inventory" service for IoT device management

Tokyo – SORACOM, INC., provider of the leading cloud-native communication platform for the Internet of Things, announced today at the SORACOM Discovery conference that the new service, Soracom Inventory, will be available worldwide beginning July 5, 2017.

Reliable estimates* anticipate that the number of IoT devices connecting to the Internet will increase to over 30 billion by 2020, including a large number of devices that will be installed in remote areas and hard to reach locations (e.g. underground or offshore). For these devices (and many others), automation of status monitoring, setting management, and measures against vulnerability represents a crucial step toward long-term viability.

“SORACOM Inventory” (Inventory) is a service that remotely and securely supports management and setting of IoT devices. Inventory makes it possible to manage the status and setting of individual IoT devices, restart devices, issue commands, arrange data, or monitor various metrics remotely and securely.

This allows customers to remotely manage both connections and devices through the SORACOM IoT communication platform. By using the SORACOM user console and API, it is now possible to improve and automate the setting and operation of remote IoT devices. In addition, the exchange between the device and the SORACOM platform uses the OMA Light Weight M2M (hereinafter referred to as LwM2M) protocol standardized by the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) for device management in IoT/M2M.

Users can access this service by installing a LwM2M agent on their devices. In addition, users who connect using the SORACOM Air cellular service can simplify the agent’s initial setup procedure. Since the server function necessary for exchange with LwM2M is maintained on the SORACOM side, customers can start using various settings on their own server side.
